Dragon Arcade was a streetwear brand that I founded, along with some relatives. I acted as leader and head designer. The brand focused on creating cartoon graphics that reflected asian (Dragon) and internet (Arcade) culture, resulting in a fun and unique fusion brand.
We had 2 collections: winter and summer, that consisted of screen printed hoodies and t-shirts respectively. Although we had plans to release more pieces, because of COVID-19 and a limited budget, we had to shut it down prematurely.
This was the very first graphic we did- a reimagining of our mascot, Three Eyes. I took inspiration from various ancient dragon paintings, and infused it with a popular video game item- blocky gold coins. The embodiment of what Dragon Arcade- the merge of traditional and contemporary cultures, with an asian flare. The hoodie proved to be extremely successful, as we easily sold out our entire stock.
These three graphics were included in the Dragon Arcade 2019 summer collection, utilizing the Three Eyes motif. "Opening your third eye" is a popular phrase to describe a state of enlightenment, but our take on the third eye is a matter of perspective. To look at the world in different viewpoints. We also used different visuals associated with asian culture- Chinese takeaway, monks, and lucky cats.
Although Dragon Arcade had a short lifespan, I was already making preparations for a 2020 collection. Below are two finalised designs that tapped into the 'nostalgia' theme of this particular collection. One being inspired by retro comic book lettering, and another inspired by 8-Bit video game sprite art.
I have plans to revive Dragon Arcade when I am in a better position to handle the business side of things- but for now, these two graphics are all that is left of the future prospects of Dragon Arcade.
